Liquefied Natural Gas: A Beacon for Factories on the Path to Energy Transition

May 26, 2025

Just a few years ago, Mexico’s energy landscape was dominated by a narrow range of petroleum-based fuels: LPG, diesel, and fuel oil (in all their variants). While other options existed, these three were the go-to choices for most industrial sectors. The reasons were clear: high availability, seemingly low costs, and minimal regulation, mainly due to limited awareness of their health and environmental impacts.

Today, Mexico still faces a limited infrastructure to supply natural gas through pipelines to all its industrial sector. However, Liquefied Natural Gas (LNG) has emerged as a practical and efficient alternative. It performs all the essential functions of petroleum-derived fuels but with a significantly lower environmental footprint:

 No adverse effects on workers’ health
 No harm to surrounding communities
 Significant reductions in CO₂ emissions impacting the ozone layer

Investing in LNG infrastructure is proving to be a smart move for many factories. Why? LNG stations are composed of modular, relocated equipment. This flexibility allows businesses to plan their energy future with medium- or long-term strategies, even if they eventually transition to another, more suitable energy source.

For many companies, LNG is unlocking a range of benefits once thought to be exclusive to pipeline gas:

 Eligibility for green business certifications
 Enhanced brand image
 Entry into international markets
 Access to sustainable financing
 Compliance with local and federal regulations
 Improved safety and reduced occupational risks

Your operation may be ready to replace diesel or fuel oil with LNG—and the only way to know is to request expert advice.
From my experience speaking with directors across various industrial sectors—regardless of headcount or production type—there’s a common goal: to improve the process. That’s a promising mindset. But the continuous improvement cycle is relentless in the face of inaction.
